Remco de Vries (1994) is a Dutch photographer and visual researcher who graduated as a documentary photographer at HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht (NL). Remco de Vries is a photographer with a great interest in journalistically underexposed issues. He is fascinated by the invisible or hard-to-reach forces that shape our world: the construction of the global economy, wealth, and interpersonal connections. This fascination is no coincidence: he comes from a bargeman's family whose stories he heard but whose life he never knew. This background, combined with an urge to dissect complex constructs into something graspable, forms the engine behind his practice. He treats his photographs as visual dissections in which observation, context, and structure are key factors. During the research of his subjects, he regularly notices a shift in his perception and sometimes even in his own opinion. Remco de Vries aims for his projects to have a similar effect on viewers, creating both understanding and room for discussion. Currently, he is working as a freelance photographer, both on self-initiated and commissioned projects.
Remco is currently part of FOTODOK’s new Talent Embassy program with nine other participants. Together with the other participants, Fotodok and a team of professionals they focus on presenting their work to the outside world.
