De Tijd - Index
Café de Tijd is a beer café on the Voorstraat in Dordrecht, housed in a listed monument dating from 1603. When I worked there, the café made up a large part of my life. I came to know it through its details: the way guests pull or pick apart their beer mats, each slightly different from the last. I began to document these small variations.
From there, I decided to photograph the entire café systematically and categorically. Not the space as a whole, but each element separately: beer mats, glasses, chairs, signs, a copper foot rail mounted crooked, a broken table corner. The same chairs that somehow all look different. The result is an index, an inventory of everything the café contains.
The book shows no overview of the space. Yet an image emerges. People can construct a mental picture of a place from its specific details. By seeing all the parts without ever beholding the whole, the viewer builds a café that exists only in the mind.
De Tijd - Index is a hand-bound hardcover with a rounded spine, produced and sold in a limited edition.
