		<description>
	The Heavy Loads of Our World - Continuation
(work in progress)
With this continuation, I shift focus from the ships themselves to the people who keep them moving. About 90% of everything we consume travels by sea, yet the seafarers who make this possible remain largely invisible. Without them, there would be no smartphones, washing machines, or office chairs.

I am particularly interested in Filipino seafarers, who make up more than 25% of the global maritime workforce. These men leave their home communities in the Philippines for contracts of 6 to 12 months aboard cargo ships, maintaining transnational identities between their life on board and their family obligations at home. Digital communication plays a crucial but limited role in bridging this distance. The central question driving this work is how Filipino seafarers sustain these identities and social relations within the structural constraints of the global maritime labor market, and how visual ethnography can make visible these processes of self-determination and alienation.

The Western perspective often assumes that crews are simply underpaid while working long hours. This view is reinforced by the "flag of convenience" system, where shipping companies register vessels under flags of countries with favorable regulations and tax benefits, regardless of actual ownership. Such arrangements affect wages, labor conditions, and workers' rights. But this framing risks reducing seafarers to victims. I want to move beyond that gaze and understand how they themselves experience and navigate this world.

To build trust and gain deeper access, I volunteer as a driver at the International Seafarers' Center The Bridge in Oostvoorne. The center offers free transport for seafarers to get ashore, providing WiFi to contact home and access to the nearby village. Through these brief but recurring encounters, I gain insight into their daily lives. The work also grants me access to ships, where I can photograph their working and living spaces.

	 The Heavy Loads of Our World (Book)

This publication, designed in collaboration with graphic designer Chris Boender, presents the 36 typological ship portraits at the heart of The Heavy Loads of Our World. The panoramic images fill the upper half of each spread, showing the vessels in strict side profile, sailing from left to right with consistent spacing around each ship. Because every photograph follows the same compositional logic, the horizon lines align across spreads. When the book lies open, the ships on the left and right pages appear to sail in convoy. Only the color of the sky or the roughness of the water reveals they are different photographs taken on different days.

Beneath each image, the information is reduced to essentials: the ship's name, time, and date of capture. An index at the back of the book contains the full data on CO₂, nitrogen oxide, and sulphur oxide emissions. Additional images are interspersed throughout, offering a sense of the sheer scale of these vessels.

The publication includes an essay by Rotterdam-based writer and essayist Arjen van Veelen, printed on light blue paper and bound as a separate booklet within the book.

Self-published in a limited edition of 30 copies. Pamphlet stitch binding. 20 × 30 cm. The cover is printed with white toner on navy blue paper.

Imago Lisboa&#38;nbsp;
	Imago Garage
Lisbon, Portugal – 2024
The Heavy Loads of Our World was shown as part of the group exhibition "Action for a Green Future II" at Imago Garage during the 6th edition of Imago Lisboa Photo Festival, from 27 September to 26 October 2024. The exhibition, curated by Rui Prata, brought together six photographers whose work addresses climate change and its consequences.

The exhibition featured work by Catarina Nogueira (Raíz), Nigel Dickinson (Hurricane Mitch), Roberto Fernández Ibáñez (Mountains of Uncertainty), José Artur Macedo (Regadio), Micael Espinha (Pluvis Es), and Remco de Vries (The Heavy Loads of Our World). Through The Heavy Loads of Our World, visitors were invited to reflect on how excessive consumption habits contribute to the depletion of raw materials and the pollution caused by the massive global transportation of goods.

Palácio do RaioBraga, Portugal – 2023
During the 33rd edition of Encontros da Imagem in Braga, Portugal, five Dutch photographers organized a self-initiated group exhibition at Palácio do Raio from 15 to 18 September 2023. The exhibition was part of the first FOTODOK Talent Embassy, a program supported by Pictoright Fund that connects emerging Dutch photographers to international photography festivals.

The participating photographers were Ilias Bardaa, Isa de Jong, Yara Jimmink, Michelle Piergoelam, and Remco de Vries. The exhibition took place in Palácio do Raio, an eighteenth-century baroque palace distinguished by its blue azulejo-tiled facade. I presented new work from The Heavy Loads of Our World: three photographs of mess rooms aboard container ships, accompanied by an installation recreating a mess room table with the condiments found on virtually every ship I visited. A copy of the book accompanied the installation.

	Discovery Awards Projections
Encontros da Imagem
Braga, Portugal – 2023

The Heavy Loads of Our World was selected for the Discovery Awards Projections during the 33rd edition of Encontros da Imagem in Braga, Portugal. The Discovery Awards aim to give visibility to photographers and projects not yet widely known in the field. Each year, around thirty photographers are selected: half receive a physical exhibition at the festival, while the other half have their work presented in projection format.

The screening of fifteen selected projects took place at Galeria do Largo do Paço, in the historic center of Braga, from 15 September to 28 October 2023.

Light-Up
	Utrecht, NL – 2022
During HKU Exposure 2022, the graduation festival of HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, selected students were invited to participate in Light-Up: a projection mapping event organized by Light-Up Collective in collaboration with HKU. On the evening of 1 July 2022, images from The Heavy Loads of Our World were projected onto the facades of three buildings across Utrecht and Bunnik.

Starting after sunset, the event took visitors on a cycling route past HKU Theater at the Janskerkhof, Kanaal30 on the Kanaalweg, and Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd in Bunnik. At each location, the work was mapped onto the architecture, transforming the buildings into temporary screens for the typological ship portraits.

	Exploring Japan

Between 2015 and 2019, I traveled to Japan three times. What started as an unexpected trip with a friend turned into a lasting fascination with the country. This book brings together photographs from those journeys: everyday scenes observed through the eyes of a European visitor. Fish markets at dawn, commuters asleep on the metro, quiet corners in the world's largest city, the steam rising from traditional onsen baths.

The images capture a Japan of contrasts, where the ultramodern and the traditional exist side by side, where density and intimacy coexist. The ordinary becomes worthy of attention.

The book was originally made as a gift for a retiring teacher who shared my fascination for Japan. What began as a single copy eventually grew into a self-published edition of 30, each hand-bound using traditional Japanese binding. The book block sits loose inside a wrap-around cover. The title is debossed into the cover, tactile to the touch. Hidden magnets keep the wrap closed when the book is not in use.

Exploring Japan is sold out.

		<description>
	De Tijd - Index
Café de Tijd is a beer café on the Voorstraat in Dordrecht, housed in a listed monument dating from 1603. When I worked there, the café made up a large part of my life. I came to know it through its details: the way guests pull or pick apart their beer mats, each slightly different from the last. I began to document these small variations.

From there, I decided to photograph the entire café systematically and categorically. Not the space as a whole, but each element separately: beer mats, glasses, chairs, signs, a copper foot rail mounted crooked, a broken table corner. The same chairs that somehow all look different. The result is an index, an inventory of everything the café contains.

The book shows no overview of the space. Yet an image emerges. People can construct a mental picture of a place from its specific details. By seeing all the parts without ever beholding the whole, the viewer builds a café that exists only in the mind.

De Tijd - Index is a hand-bound hardcover with a rounded spine, produced and sold in a limited edition.

		<description>
	The Heavy Loads of Our WorldEvery day, gigantic container ships enter the port of Rotterdam. These vessels are direct expressions of globalization, the reason behind your cheap t-shirt and reasonably priced television. Yet how ironic that the more ships have grown in size and consequence, the less space they take up in our imagination.

This typological series of 36 photographs documents the largest container ships in the world. Each image is supplemented with data on CO₂, nitrogen oxide, and sulphur oxide emissions per kilometer traveled, recent ports of call, and other relevant ship specifications. A video installation visualizes the overwhelming scale of these vessels, while infographics trace the explosive growth of container ships since their inception and the cartel formation among major shipping companies.

The project reveals how a handful of predominantly private companies, through mutual price agreements and capacity restrictions, dictate the prices we pay in shops. We concern ourselves with ethical consumption, yet rarely consider the ships that carry our goods or the crews working aboard them under questionable conditions. Are economies of scale truly achievable with these floating giants, or do we simply pay a hidden price?

Read more about the continuation of this project.

		<description>Core Schiphol
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol,
Haarlemmermeer, the Netherlands
April 2020

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the third-busiest airport in Europe and the main international hub for the Netherlands. In 2019, the airport processed 71.7 million passengers and 496,826 flight movements. The terminal complex spans 650,000 square meters and connects the Netherlands to 332 destinations worldwide.

In April 2020, at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Schiphol processed 126,877 passengers, a decrease of 98% compared to April 2019. Flight movements dropped by 90% to 4,242. The average seat occupancy per flight fell from 82% to 29%. At Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport, and Groningen Eelde Airport, passenger traffic came to a complete standstill.

Schiphol consolidated its operations into what it designated "Core Schiphol." Five of its seven piers were closed to passenger traffic: the B-pier was partially accessible, while the C, G, and H/M piers were shut down entirely. Only the D, E, and F piers remained in use. The closed piers and gates served as temporary parking spaces for grounded aircraft, as did the Aalsmeerbaan, one of the airport's six runways. Approximately 25 KLM aircraft were parked on this runway alone.

Of the three departure halls, only Departures 2 and a section of Departures 3 remained operational. Check-in was limited to these areas. Lounge 3 was closed; Lounges 1 and 2 remained open for Schengen and non-Schengen flights respectively. All food and drink outlets in the terminal were shut, in line with national lockdown measures. The airport remained open for repatriation flights, cargo traffic, emergency services, and diverted aircraft.

The infrastructure designed to move 200,000 passengers per day stood largely idle. Empty check-in desks, motionless escalators, silent baggage halls. The airport appeared abandoned. These photographs document a rupture in the daily functioning of critical infrastructure, an event unlikely to recur.

		<description>Toxic Delta
The Poisoning of Europe's Largest River Delta
(work in progress)

This project began under the working title Dark Waters (2024), focusing on the factory I grew up near and its deep impact on the living environment of an entire region. Using archival material and recent research, I examined how Chemours (formerly DuPont de Nemours) in Dordrecht transformed from an open and proud employer for the region into a closed fortress through decades of scandals surrounding health, nature and welfare. Combining archival imagery with my own photographs, I created a contrast between the factory as it was in the 1960s, 70s and 80s and how it appears today, alongside images of the surrounding environment. These are presented on a map where the waterways contaminated with PFAS are marked in red.

The project has since expanded beyond Dordrecht to encompass the wider Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. This delta is home to some of the most densely populated areas in Europe: the Rijnmond region around Rotterdam, the Drechtsteden around Dordrecht, and the Antwerp metropolitan area in Flanders. Millions of people live, work and raise families in direct proximity to one of Europe's largest concentrations of petrochemical industry. The contamination of groundwater and soil in such an environment poses severe risks to public health and ecosystems alike. PFAS compounds, often referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their persistence in the environment, accumulate in soil, migrate through groundwater systems, and enter the food chain. In a delta where water connects everything, contamination does not respect municipal or national borders.

The central question driving this work is how communities and nature coexist in the shadow of Europe's petrochemical industry, and what invisible structures of violence shape this toxic proximity throughout the delta region.

Photographically, the project focuses on the boundary zones where industrial and residential worlds meet: playgrounds overlooking storage tanks, gardens bordering factory fences, dykes that both separate and connect. Through an observational approach, I aim to make visible what often remains unseen.

This project is currently in the preliminary research phase.

Remco de Vries (1994) is a Dutch photographer and visual researcher who graduated as a documentary photographer at HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht (NL). Remco de Vries is a photographer with a great interest in journalistically underexposed issues. He is fascinated by the invisible or hard-to-reach forces that shape our world: the construction of the global economy, wealth, and interpersonal connections. This fascination is no coincidence: he comes from a bargeman's family whose stories he heard but whose life he never knew. This background, combined with an urge to dissect complex constructs into something graspable, forms the engine behind his practice. He treats his photographs as visual dissections in which observation, context, and structure are key factors. During the research of his subjects, he regularly notices a shift in his perception and sometimes even in his own opinion. Remco de Vries aims for his projects to have a similar effect on viewers, creating both understanding and room for discussion. Currently, he is working as a freelance photographer, both on self-initiated and commissioned projects.

Remco is currently part of FOTODOK’s new Talent Embassy program with nine other participants. Together with the other participants, Fotodok and a team of professionals they focus on presenting their work to the outside world.︎ FOTODOK
